w/ Emperor X
Thursday, November 17th
Whatever happened to
anti-folk? Back in 2007, it seemed like you couldn’t watch a laptop or
health insurance commercial without hearing a Regina Spektor song and,
after the release of Juno, there were
a million college girls who couldn’t stop explaining how the lyrics of
Kimya Dawson defined their lives. But in the last few years I haven’t
heard much of a peep.
Well, Jeffrey Lewis hasn’t given up the fight. In
fact, he’s always kept himself more relevant than the genre as a whole
through branching out, as with his cartooning career, his low-budget history lessons, and his podcast appearances. Most importantly, though, he’s consistently put out clever, catchy, inventive
albums. His latest, A Turn in the Dream Songs, was very recently released and is already getting rave reviews by the likes of Robert Christgau.
This Thursday, Lewis
will play a free show at Mayday in Northside with opening band Emperor
X. Since this show will be a stop on Lewis’s tour proper in support of A Turn in the Dream Songs, it’ll be a
great chance to hear him perform some of the best songs he’s written in years. I mean, who am I to argue with Robert Christgau?
